  Indonesia have many of lakes, both natural lakes and artificial lakes, these lakes are scattered throughout the major islands in Indonesia such as Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and also Papua, the lake can be utilized by the surrounding population directly and indirectly, the use of lake directly is for irrigation, fishing, washing, bathing, and other activities, utilization indirectly of lake water is for drinking or for consumption, and must be process in order to keep the health qualify, more commercial utilize of lake is for power generation, tourism objects, as well as transportation, several advantages or benefit of lake utilize as transportation is relatively cheap and can lift large and heavy items.

  Considering the magnitude of the benefits of a lake for human life, it is necessary to attempt for preservation of some problems that threaten the lakes such as lake water pollution by sewage and industrial plants. silt lake as a result of silting from erosion and flood that caused by a broken lake wall, a few examples of natural and artificial lakes that scattered in Indonesia likes Toba lake, Singkarak lake, Kerinci lake, Maninjau lake, Ranau lake, Jati Lluhur lake, Gajah Mungkur lake, Batur lake, Tondano lake, Poso lake, Tempe lake, Kelimutu lake, Sentani lake, Saguling lake, and others. Toba lake is the largest and most famous lake in Indonesia which located in Samosir island north Sumatra.
